Book Review #16: My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises, by Frederick Backman
Review of My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises, by Fredrik Backman
Fredrik Backman's My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises is one of the sweetest, funniest, and most heartwarming books I've ever read. The story follows Elsa, a seven-year-old girl who feels like she doesn't belong anywhere except with her wonderfully eccentric grandmother. After her grandmother dies, Elsa is sent on a journey to deliver a series of apology letters to people she barely knows. Along the way, she discovers that the fairy tales her grandmother told her weren't just stories—they were inspired by the real people around them, each carrying their own struggles, regrets, and dreams.
What I loved most about this book was the relationship between Elsa and her grandmother. Their conversations are hilarious, chaotic, and full of love, making it impossible not to smile while reading. Grandma is completely unpredictable, while Elsa is curious, witty, and endlessly lovable. Together they create a magical world where dragons, knights, and kingdoms become a way of understanding the real world. I also loved how naturally Backman blends humour with emotional moments. One page had me laughing out loud, and the next had me trying not to cry.
The characters are another reason this book is so special. At first, many of Elsa's neighbours seem strange, rude, or unlikeable, but as Elsa delivers the letters, she uncovers the stories behind each of them. Backman reminds us that everyone has hidden struggles, and that kindness often begins with understanding someone else's story. Instead of judging people by first impressions, the novel encourages us to look a little deeper.
If I had to criticise anything, the fantasy world and its many kingdoms can be confusing at first, especially since the connections to reality aren't immediately obvious. However, once everything begins to fit together, the story becomes even more rewarding.
The impact of My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises comes from its ability to make ordinary people feel extraordinary. It's a story about grief, friendship, forgiveness, and finding where you belong, but it never feels heavy because it's told through Elsa's wonderfully imaginative eyes. I finished the book with a huge smile on my face and a few tears in my eyes. It's the kind of story that quietly reminds you that being different isn't something to hide—it's something to celebrate.
